Bagua -- the Eight Diagrams
The eight diagrams composed of lines are called Bagua. Each of the diagrams has three levels (or lines). The long line represents Yang and the short line (broken line) represents Yin. Bagua is closely associated with Yin Yang and Taiji (see the image on the right for an example). They are part of the Chinese ancient culture.
The following gives a brief summary of the meanings of the eight diagrams.
Qian2 (乾) -- represents heaven. It is pure yang.
Kun1 (坤) -- represents earth. It is pure yin.
Zhen4 (震) -- represents thunder. It is yang.
Xun4 (巽) -- represents wind. It is yin.
Kan3 (坎) -- represents water. It is yang.
Li2 (离) -- represents fire. It is yin.
Gen4 (艮) -- represents mountain. It is yang.
Dui4 (兑) -- represents marsh. It is yin.
