The Official Mascots of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games
Fuwa is the official mascots of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
The first one from the left is Beibei. Beibei is a fish, which symbolizes surplus, prosperity and harvestin Chinese culture. Beibei sounds like the first Chinese character (Bei) for Beijing.
The second one from the left is Jingjing. Jingjing looks like a panda, the national treasure. Jingjing soulds the same as the second Chinese character (Jing) for Beijing so Beibei and Jingjing together symbolizes Beijing.
The middle one is Huanhuan. Huanhuan is "a child of fire, symbolizing the Olympic Flame and the passion of sport -- and passion is the blessing he bestows."
The second one from the right is Yingying. It is an antelope. "Like all antelopes, Yingying is fast and agile and can swiftly cover great stretches of land as he races across the earth." Like Beibei and Jingjing representing Beijing, Huanhuan and Yingying symbolizes 'welcome'. Huan Ying means welcome.
The last one is Nini. "Nini's figure is drawn from this grand tradition of flying designs. Her golden wings symbolize the infinite sky and spread good-luck as a blessing wherever she flies." Ni sounds like the Chinese character for you. Thus the five mascots symbolize 'Beijing Welcomes You.'
